decluttering

I'm trying the 1 in 2 out method
(does not apply to food, cleaning stuff)

Basically for each new thing you buy, you get rid of two old things.

It's making me evaluate how badly I want something, and helping with impulse buying (example - I about bought a cute coffee mug, but realized it'd probably be one of the two things I'd get rid of the next time I bought something)

Re: decluttering

got a new shirt = got rid of 2 old triangular tomato cages that were flimsy & I hadn't used in years

got a box for my recipe cards ( for years they had been sitting in a pile on the kitchen counter) = got rid of old rusty garden fencing that's not been used for years

yea - more room in the basement! (and I still have the tomato cages that worked, but I've not used....may try them again next year)

Re: decluttering

A charity I support was asking for donations for a fundraising garage sale that they were having. In my mind I could bring a moving van full of stuff but in reality with limited time (other stuff going on and very little time to focus on this) I only managed a trunkful.

I was actually a little frustrated that I was having a hard time coming up with stuff to give away, so I challenged myself... every cabinet, closet, drawer or whatever I opened up held at least one item I could part with so I needed to find it and pull it out. That actually worked pretty well! Of course, I didn't open up cabinets that held stuff I use a lot.

Not the most effective way to get rid of stuff, but I did get rid of a trunkful. And now some of my cabinets are a little less reminiscent of Fibber McGee.

Re: decluttering

You motivated me to clean out some of my dresser drawers

I chucked some stuff and reorganized 2 drawers.

I'm now looking for things that have expired as my "things out"

Re: decluttering

I've got an old box of material/info from when I was a scout leader - that's become my "go to" box to get rid of stuff

Everything I clean or put away something, I ask myself if I'm willing to clean it or put it away again? Is it worth a lifetime of cleaning? Works especially good when I dust.
