Re: Cats know the "f" word

Goober goes out in the evening for a few hours and me saying treats is the only way I can get him to come in.

Re: Cats know the "f" word

We are considering getting a cat for our little one. Any suggestions when is a good age for the LO to get a kitten? He goes absolutely mad whenever he sees a cat, but tends to try and remove their skin from their bodies. Not sure if a kitten would just grow up hating him.

Children really aren't ready to have their own pets until at least 5. Kittens can do quite a bit of damage if they are trying to protect themselves.

I would say don't get a pet until your LO knows how to be gentle. The cat/kitten will be miserable and run from your LO and your LO will be clawed in self defense.

Re: Cats know the "f" word

^Exactly.

We got two kittens when my kids were 5 and 3. The 5yo (DS) was gentle with his (very calm) kitten and the 3yo (DD) would.not.listen when I'd tell her to stop carrying her (increasingly stressed out) kitten around by the neck. 17 years later and that "kitten" (now an old lady cat) still runs when she sees DD.

If you absolutely have to have a cat (I understand - I'm a cat person) I would suggest going to a shelter and adopting an older, more patient cat who would be accepting of a LO pulling its tail.

If your child has very minimal experiences with pets in general definitely wait until maybe 7 or 8. When you do get a cat make sure you get an overly friendly one so that it is a good first experience for all. A two-year-old would be a good age because it's grown enough to accept human interaction but is still really young.
