Catfishing

My friend asked a group of us for advice about someone she met at an online dating service. He totally fell in love with her, but he's away for work and can't meet for a while. He has a very common name, his wife died, he has money, yada, yada, yada.

I asked some questions, did some basic searches with the information she had, and I believe she is getting catfished.

I gave her the information I found and she just totally ignored the discrepancies or thinks there is a logical explanation for them.

There's nothing I can do about it if she doesn't want to use common sense.

Have you ever known someone to be catfished?

No, they've never met. They don't even video chat, just text.

You got that right!

All these months later, and she just realized that she was catfished. She spoke to some of us about it and she was in deep! I won't give all the details, but she went to the police last night.

I feel very sorry for her.

No - I just don't understand how he "totally" fell in love with her. With her profile? Pic? What she claims to be real?

Not certain how long they have been back and forthing online...but really - how can anyone even be certain of people - even IN REAL LIFE?

( DD dated a "divorced" guy from work for about five years. He lived at parents, paid his rent and mortgage on home that spouse and kids were in. Always the devoted "dad."

He was not divorced. The house was foreclosed on. And dd and I caught him canoodling with another in a little club by her place the two of them enjoyed being at. I think it was my dd's date nite with him that he gave a reason why they weren't going to go out that night.

He broke it off with her a month before she lost her 16 year old bff poodle baby to cancer. )

Did he claim love after a length of time? Phone calls at all?
