The Vicious Cycle

I have been overweight for a decade now. The doctor really wants to see me lose a few pounds. I've been walking for years and I've upped the walking to running this last year. I don't run far and I don't run fast (3 miles 3 days a week) but I do it, and I am relatively active on the other days. (Except when I'm napping. )

A few weeks ago I hurt my foot-- a combination of "cute" shoes that are not good for feet, a run, and a million steps helping someone move. I went to the doctor who diagnosed peroneal tendonitis. He tells me to rest, ice, medicate as needed.

Oh, and I should lose weight because that will put less stress on the feet.
<sigh>

Re: The Vicious Cycle

You appear to be active and you exercise. I'm surprised to hear you're overweight and you have such a difficult time losing it and, maybe, keeping it off. I remember when I went to a dietician. She told me to list everything I ate for a week. I found out I ate a lot of junk - more than I ever thought I did anyway.

I sure do miss eating those potato chips at will... French Onion Dip... Yummy!

Hang in there Lucy. I'm rooting for you.

Re: The Vicious Cycle

Ugh. I hear you loud and clear, Lucy.

One of my good friends has recurring foot injuries, but she is also an exercise addict. She has taken up swimming laps at the Y and long-distance cycling. I guess the key is to find an exercise you can do that won't put stress on the foot.

I would've chosen the cute shoes too. Running and helping someone move? Eh, maybe not so much.

Cute shoes... Yeah, me too.

Can never have enough shoes... Just ask my wife.

Re: The Vicious Cycle

It's true about the shoes! I used to work at a shoe store. That was heaven. Now my shoe wardrobe is rather limited, but I still like a cute shoe.

I am not an addict to running, but I can't figure out how to stay off my feet with being a wife and mother. Maybe I'll just walk tomorrow and see how that works.

Knot, I do write down everything I eat. Sometimes I'm surprised how those BLT's add up-- bites, licks, and tastes! But even my DH wonders how I can be chubby. That's the downside. The upside is that I'll never be frail!

ETA: Ugh, "compression." It actually makes it feel worse instead of better.

Re: The Vicious Cycle

I've been doing the 5:2 diet (with no exercise to speak of) and it appears to be working for me thus far! 2 fasting days of only eating a quarter of my TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) and the rest of the time eating up to (and more often than not) and over my TDEE on what I want, though I try to be healthy most of the time!

19 lbs lost since beginning of March! Another 14 lbs to go! Slow and steady loss (around a pound a week) but it's coming off! I hope this will become a way of life for me, moving to the maintenance program of 6:1 (one day fasting). There are also many health benefits attached to this process.

Re: The Vicious Cycle

Do you fast two days in a row, Anns? How does that work?

Re: The Vicious Cycle

You eat "normally" but not excessively for 5 days of the week. For two days you restrict down to around 500 cals for an "average" woman or a quarter of your TDEE for the likes of shorties like Lucy and I!

Your calorie deficit comes from the fast days. You chose any two days you want or you can do them back to back. It is very flexible so if you get an invite for a meal out (like that ever happens with me!) On your fast day you go out and enjoy the meal and just defer the fast day!

It's much easier to sustain a restrictive calorie fast when you know it is just for a day (x2). And if you start to crave something on your fast day you just remind yourself you can "have it tomorrow!". When tomorrow comes though I don't often fancy it by then!

Re: The Vicious Cycle

Wow, that's impressive, Swiss! But you need to take your wife shoe-shopping as a reward for all that hard work!
