news trends or reality

I've noticed an increase in news reports on shootings/stabbing (@ malls, colleges, etc.)

my question is has there actually been an increase or is it just what is "trending" in the news?

Re: news trends or reality

I think it's both/and. There are more shootings, more terrorist attacks. But there's also more news coverage--24/7!--, more video footage, etc.

Re: news trends or reality

On an unrelated note, Merriam Webster added the word "clickbait" to its dictionary in 2015.

Re: news trends or reality

I'm not sure whether things are happening on a greater scale or whether it's just easier to access more reports from a wider area. I sometimes think more things are being highlighted to instil fear and keep us divided and distracted from other issues. I'm not suggesting the incidents themselves are done with the intention of distraction but the highlighting of situations that occur around us can be cherry picked to nudge our ways of thinking.

Like when issues of teenage pregnancies get highlighted and treated as a current and growing endemic. Whereas the reality is teen and unmarried pregnancies always happened. But kids would get ushered away to maternity homes and children adopted out etc without people outside of their parents ever knowing because if the "scandal".

News websites often do this, they write articles where you can write comments below about them and they write about something that will provoke people deliberately just to get them to the site, the story is the click bait...sometimes the facts in the story are only half true, but that doesnt matter, its only about getting viewers....we have news websites in NZ owned by Fairfax media who do it all the time.

I think its more of a news thing. Look at statistics for gun violence online. There is no noticeable spike in deaths over the past few years. I'd post a link but I'm a noob here so I can't.
