No, what I mean is that the "adult" thing to do would be to tell his dad himself that he wants the check and those two savings accounts (plus bank statements) turned over to him before going to a lawyer. Has he done that?

As far as option 2, he could just contact his GM and tell her that if the check hasn't cleared to put a stop payment on it and send all future checks directly to him. Just IMHO, a declaration of "I'm an adult now!" by an 18yo is less effective and less well-received than adult behavior.

I didn't realize there were minor savings accounts involved. Did X deposit the check in one of those? That would change the situation. If that's what X did, then I would let it be. I wouldn't bring a lawyer into this. It's up to DS to work it out with his father.


P.S. If this is a true custodial account, DS may already have access to the accounts.
